On the 40th anniversary of Provincetown Arts Magazine, it published this essay arguing for Neith as the ur-mother of the Provincetown Players.
Neith, an anarchist-feminist who established a writing career as a single woman in Greenwich Village in the 1890s, comprised, along with labor journalist Mary Heaton Vorse and novelist and playwright Susan Glaspell, a trio that, according to historian Dee Garrison, formed the nucleus of Provincetown as a crucible of innovation and social experimentation.
It also discusses the premiere of Neith's 1935 adaptation of H.G. Wells' "The Sea Lady" for Broadway -- that occurred online (as a result of COVID). This is my 2nd article about Neith to appear in this magazine.
The magazine is available for purchase here.
